Two items recovered from the SS Central America, more famously known as the Ship of Gold, including: a pinch of gold dust, housed in a circular case identifying it as “California Gold Dust, 1857”; and a 10-cent ‘Seated Liberty’ coin from 1852, .75˝ in diameter. Both are encapsulated by PCGS with a signed certificate of authenticity from Chief Scientist Bob Evans; the reverse of the certificate grades the dime as “AU53.”
The SS Central America was a 280-foot sidewheel steamer that operated between Central America and the East Coast of the United States during the 1850s. The ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857, along with 425 of her 578 passengers and crew and 30,000 pounds of gold, an event that contributed to the Panic of 1857.
