Description

German painter (1854–1918) renowned for his portrayals of the most powerful members of the animal kingdom—lions, tigers, polar bears, moose, and buffalo are recurring subjects in his works. Original oil painting of a mighty buffalo drinking from a stream, accomplished by Richard Friese on a 14.5 x 9.75 mounted sheet, signed in the lower right corner by the artist, "R. Friese, '98." This naturalistic painting of a solitary buffalo is rendered in rich, earthy browns with textured brushwork that emphasizes its shaggy coat and powerful form. A softly blurred, wooded background in muted greens and earthy ochres centers attention on the imposing figure. Ornately framed to an overall size of 24 x 19. In fine condition, with hairline cracks through the decorative corners of the frame, not affecting its stability.

The Western Americana auction of Jochen Zeitz.
