Partly-printed DS, one page, 8.25 x 14, March 31, 1890. Expense voucher issued to Jacob Yoes, United States Marshal in the Western District of Arkansas, for services rendered by Deputy E. B. Ratteree in the case of “The United States vs. John Gaul,” which indicates that a warrant was received at Fort Smith, Arkansas, in March 1890, executed on March 24th in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, and returned with the defendant on March 28th. Ratteree was given $6 for 100 miles traveled. In very good to fine condition, with a few short edge tears, and a half-separation to the central horizontal fold. Edward Burton 'Coon' Ratterree (1852–1912) served as a U.S. Marshal operating out of Fort Smith, Arkansas, under the authority of Judge Isaac Parker, the famed 'Hanging Judge.' Ratterree was also a member of the posse that captured the noted outlaw Ned Christie at his fortified stronghold in the Cherokee Nation in 1892, bringing an end to one of the most notorious manhunts of the era.
