Description

Crystal-clear original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of Arikara scout Goose, shown in profile, facing left, with a composed, dignified expression, as captured by David Francis Barry, a pioneering photographer of the American West. Goose's hair is parted and wrapped in fur, beaded necklaces cascade across his chest, and he holds a catlinite pipe and decorative tamper. Imprinted on the mount: "D. F. Barry, West Superior, Wis.," with Barry's likeness of Chief Gall illustrated on the reverse, along with an advertisement for "Photographs of All the Noted Indians." In fine condition.

Goose, an Arikara scout, served as lead scout for George Armstrong Custer during the 1874 Black Hills Expedition, a role that later led many to blame him for opening the region to white incursions. Despite this controversy, he continued to serve as a scout and was wounded during the Reno engagement at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
