Dramatic original 10 x 8 imperial cabinet photo of "Cambria, Wyo., on the B. & M. R. R.," taken by H. R. Locke of Deadwood, South Dakota, showing a winding row of modest newly built homes along a road leading to a mining operation and refining plant, nestled within steeply rising valley walls, sparsely covered with trees and scrub. The studio mount is imprinted: "Locke & Peterson, Deadwood, S. D." In fine condition.
Located in the Black Hills of Wyoming, Cambria was established following the 1887 discovery of rich coal deposits, quickly developing into a thriving company town tied to the expanding railroad industry. Built and operated by the Cambria Fuel Company, the town featured organized housing, schools, and community facilities to support its workforce. At its peak in the early 20th century, Cambria was home to over a thousand residents and produced substantial quantities of coal for regional use. By 1928, the mines were exhausted, operations ceased, and the town was abandoned, leaving behind the remnants of a once-bustling mining community.
