Description

Original semi-glossy 4.5 x 6.5 silver gelatin photo of Oglala Lakota chief Low Dog by David Francis Barry, a pioneering photographer of the American West, housed in its original 7 x 11 studio folder, signed in white ink, "Barry Photo," with "Barry" blindstamped on the mount and a biographical blurb affixed on the reverse. Low Dog is shown in his full Native American regalia, topped by a single feather in his hair, with tomahawk in hand. The blurb on the reverse describes D. F. Barry as a "Photographer of Noted Indians," and thus describes Low Dog: "A Member of Chief Gall's band of Indians…He had a very wicked face…In the Custer fight he worked hard to get credit for killing so many soldiers. At the agency…he was pointed out to the whites as a real bad Indian." In fine condition.
