Description

Appealing ninth-plate tintype portrait of George A. Custer as taken by Mathew Brady on May 23, 1865, measuring 1.5˝ x 2˝ within its 2.5˝ x 2.75˝ hinged case, showing the cavalryman standing with his arms crossed in a three-quarter-length pose—an iconic image captured while Custer was in Washington, D.C., to participate in the Grand Review of the Armies. This is a cropped version of the pose listed as K-79 in 'Custer in Photographs' by D. Mark Katz. In very good to fine condition, with a bit of fine crazing and slight lifting of the emulsion on the left side of the tintype.

The Western Americana auction of Jochen Zeitz.
