Large portrait painting of John Wayne by an unknown artist, accomplished in oil on a 27.75 x 38.5 canvas, depicting ‘Duke’ in a classic three-quarter-length Western pose with one hand gripping the barrel of a rifle and his other resting on the grip of a holstered pistol. The painting is signed in the lower left corner by the artist, ostensibly “D. Jefferson.” The handsome portrait serves as a faithful painted reproduction of a famous photograph by Bob Willoughby, taken in 1971 at the Warner Bros. studio on the set of the Western film The Cowboys, which starred Wayne in the lead role as Wil Andersen, a tough, aging Montana rancher and cattleman who must drive a large herd of cattle to market. When his regular cowhands abandon him for a nearby gold rush, he’s forced to hire a group of schoolboys as inexperienced cowhands to make the drive. Willoughby’s photo later ran on the cover of LIFE magazine in 1972, with the headline ‘John Wayne: Memories of a G-rated Cowboy.’ Framed sans glass to an overall size of 35 x 45.25. In fine condition.
