Description

Two typed ‘Memorial Day’ form letters in Hebrew, both signed by Moshe Dayan as Israeli Minister of Defense, one page, 8.5 x 11, dated 1969 and 1970. These letters were issued for Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s annual Memorial Day honoring fallen soldiers and victims of terror, both are signed at the conclusion in ballpoint by Dayan.

The 1969 letter, in part: “Independence Day—almost twenty-five years have passed since we raised the flag of our independence to establish the State of Israel, sovereign and independent. The years have been years of hardship and struggle, of burden and sacrifice. We have been called upon to bear heavy costs—of blood and sorrow—yet through them we have strengthened the foundations of our existence in our land and our state…We will not rest from our struggle for peace. But we know that only through strength and vigilance can we guarantee our survival. We do not desire war—we seek to live as a free people in our land.”

The 1970 letter, in part (translated): “On the eve of Independence Day we gather together in grief and remembrance, and place ourselves in mourning for the soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces who fell in battle, and for the victims of hostile acts…In the shadow of the pain of bereavement and sorrow, we know that there is no comfort for parents and families who have lost their loved ones. Yet we also believe that their sacrifice was not in vain. We are committed to continue along the path for which they gave their lives, until we are assured that no hostile hand will rise again against Israel, and peace will be granted to our land. In overall fine condition.
