Description

Irish nationalist politician (1846–1891) who was a powerful advocate for Irish Home Rule. Two letters signed by Charles Stewart Parnell, concerning the disposition of his sister's remains:

- ALS signed "Chas. S. Parnell," one page, 4.5 x 7, black-bordered stationery, August 28, 1882, in full: "I beg to enclose you copy of a letter which I have addressed to Mr. Nolan, and which embodies the wishes of my sisters and relatives on this side with regard to the resting place of the remains of my sister."

- ALS signed "Chas S. Parnell," three pages on two adjoining sheets, black-bordered stationery, August 28, 1882, in part: "I beg to say that, since the receipt of letters from American informing me of the wish of our friends there that my sister's remains should be interred in Ireland, I have consulted my brother and sisters on this side of the Atlantic, and they all desire that the remains should rest in America—the Country where my sister was best known—where she had most friends—and where she has lived and worked for so many years past. A public funeral in this country would be most painful to the feelings of my sisters here; and would open wider a wound which has not yet commenced to close."

In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
