Description

"Opened fire at 300 yds"—Polish Mustang pilots intercept V-1 flying bombs over the south coast of England, July 1944

World War II-dated original typed combat report for two pilots of the No. 316 (Polish) Fighter Squadron, operating RAF Mustang Mk. III fighters from RAF Friston during the V-1 campaign against Britain. The report, one page, 13 x 8, dated July 13, 1944, and addressed to H.Q. A.D.G.B. [Air Defence of Great Britain], records an interception over the Hailsham and Pevensey Bay area, with operational details including times, course, speed, and height. The report preserves two narrative combat entries in full:

“First seen crossing coast at 300 yds ahead, course 350 and height 2000 at 300 yds dead astern. Opened fire at 300 yds, and F.A. exploded on ground. Pieces believed in Hailsham area.”

“First seen crossing coast over Pevensey Bay. Opened fire at 300 yds. Diver climbed and then crashed on ground 3 miles N. of Hailsham.”

These accounts describe the successful engagement of a German V-1 (‘Diver’) flying bomb shortly after it crossed the English coast, a typical interception profile carried out at low altitude and high speed. Polish squadrons of the RAF, including No. 316, played a key role in Operation Diver, the air defense of Britain against V-1 attacks, with Mustang Mk. III fighters proving particularly effective against the fast-moving pilotless weapons. In fine condition, with some light toning to the right edge.
