Description

After five years of German occupation, the only British soil Hitler ever held finds out the war is over—V-E Day broadside from The Guernsey Star, May 8, 1945

Uncommon ‘V-E Day’ broadside issued with The Guernsey Star newspaper on May 8, 1945, announcing the end of German occupation in the Channel Islands, featuring the banner headline, “The War Is Over for Guernsey, German Officers Inform Bailiff of Surrender, Historic States Meeting at Mid-Day To-Day.” The single-page news broadside, 12 x 19.5, issued as a “Good News Issue,” reports that German officers had informed the Bailiff of surrender, stating that “the war has, so far as Guernsey was concerned, had ended,” and notes that island residents could listen to Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s address at 3 o’clock, after which “flags can be flown in Guernsey as a sign of rejoicing.” The text further recounts the formal notification delivered at the Royal Court House and the convening of an emergency States meeting to communicate the momentous news. In fine condition. Issued the same day as Victory in Europe (V-E) Day, this ephemeral broadside captures the precise moment of liberation for Guernsey, one of the only British territories occupied by German forces during World War II.
