Medical researcher and virologist (1914-1995) who discovered and developed the polio vaccine. Two items: TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The Salk Institute, March 19, 1979, letter to John R. Siegel of Lithia Springs Comprehensive High School, in part: “As for your question concerning the contribution of individuals to modern medicine, as I implied in the statement from MAN UNFOLDING I prefer to think of the network of contributors to the development of modern medicine, and to regard its emergence as part of the evolutionary process. If I were to identify any one person, or any number of persons, I would not do justice to the others upon whose work each depended in a context in which modern medicine was to emerge as an inevitability of a long evolutionary and historical process. It is more interesting to identify the ideas than the individuals, even though they are interlinked. If I were to attempt to answer the question in this way, I would have to write a history of medicine since 1800 and I am certain that is not what you would want me to do”; and a TQS on an off-white 9 x 6 sheet containing a typed passage from Salk’s 1972 book, Man Unfolding, in full: “The educational problem of the present—in all cultures—requires that we teach the young the greater importance of acquiring a constructive method of thinking which keeps the mind open to the discovery of new aspects of reality in a dynamic approximation of truth than of equipping them with ideas that resist change. It is also crucial to equip the mind to think about increased cooperation rather than increased competition. We must be open to such changes, learning about the nature of science and culture, and about the value of both for man's survival as well as for his personal satisfaction and fulfillment.” In overall very fine condition.
