Significant lock of hair from the head of Andrew Jackson, measuring approximately 4˝ in length, included with a segment of its original transmittal envelope, 6.5˝ x 6˝, which is annotated in pencil, “Father’s Hair, June 9, 1845,” the day after Jackson's death at the age of 78. In fine condition. Accompanied by two letters of authenticity, one signed by Marsha Mullin, Curator of The Hermitage Museum (The Home of Andrew Jackson), and the other signed by Harold D. Moser, Editor-Director of ‘The Papers of Andrew Jackson’ project at the University of Tennessee.
The Mullin letter, in part: “Thank you for bringing in your sample of Andrew Jackson's hair along with the note which accompanied it. The hair appears to be the same hair as most of our locks of Jackson's hair, a course white hair. The note, which as I recall says ‘Father's hair June 9, 1845,’ does appear to be in the hand of Andrew Jackson Junior as it is very similar to pencil written items in Junior's hand in our collection. The available evidence therefore, does indicate that your hair memento is indeed the hair of Andrew Jackson.”
The Moser letter, in part: “Thanks for your letter of November 13 with its xerox copy of Andrew Jackson's hair and the piece of paper in which the hair was enclosed. I tend to agree with Marsha Mullen regarding the writing on the torn piece of paper – it certainly looks like the writing of Andrew Jackson, Jr. I have enclosed copies of two letters from AJ, Jr., so that you can also make a comparison for yourself.” The referenced copied letters from Jackson, Jr., are included, as is an engraved portrait of Andrew Jackson bearing a preprinted signature.
