Extremely rare Chac Mool soft toy souvenir from the Mexico City 1968 Summer Olympics. The small pink jaguar measures 11˝ x 8.75˝ x 5˝, has light green eyes, and is covered with yellow dots and flowers. A golden ribbon with the Mexico City Games emblem is tied in a bow around her neck. In fine condition.
Even though the 1968 Mexico City Olympics didn’t have an official mascot, a Chac Mool plush jaguar became a crowd favorite. The pink cat, cute but fierce, showed up in Olympic souvenir shops and catalogues, and its name—Chac Mool—comes from a Mayan term meaning ‘great jaguar.’
The toy was based on the Red Jaguar Throne hidden inside the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichén Itzá. The real throne is a striking red limestone jaguar with jade eyes, jade spots, and shell fangs, its open mouth meant to convey power. In ancient times, it served as a ruler’s seat, symbolizing the jaguar’s deep connection to strength, authority, the night, and the underworld in Maya mythology.
