Attractive brass-tone souvenir brooch from the Stockholm 1912 Olympics, measuring 3˝ in length, with the head bearing a small red gem and engraved text, “Stockholm, 1912,” and the main body featuring a blue enamel cover with gilt text in Swedish, “Minne Olympiska Spelen [Memory Olympic Games].” The middle of the body appears to feature a small brass ice skate, and the underside is stamped “Import.”
At the IOC meeting in Berlin on May 28, 1909, Sweden proposed a simple Olympic program featuring only athletics, swimming, gymnastics, and wrestling. Other nations pushed for a broader schedule, leading Sweden to submit an expanded program in 1911 that included tug of war, cycling, fencing, football, equestrian events, tennis, rowing, shooting, skating, and yachting. Skating was later removed on February 7, 1910, because it was considered a winter sport and was already planned for the upcoming Nordic Games.
