REO Motors, Inc., originally the REO Motor Car Company, was founded in 1904 in Lansing, Michigan, by Ransom E. Olds after he left Oldsmobile. By May 1945, as World War II was ending, REO had long since shifted away from passenger cars (which it stopped producing in the late 1930s) to focus on commercial trucks and military vehicles. During the war, REO contributed to the Allied effort by producing military trucks, engines, and components under government contracts.
