Description

Two letters from Katharine Hepburn, both sent to Elizabeth Wolff, which include: an ALS, one page, both sides, 6.25 x 4.25, personal stationery card, July 1, 1980, the handwritten letter reads: “Just a word to tell you that I am slowly getting better. And another word to tell you how very grateful I am to you for your thoughts, your consideration + your sensitivity on my behalf. It made my hospital stay so much more comfortable than it might have been to have your loving care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart + if I can ever be of help to you let me know”; and a TLS, one page, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, September 30, 1980: “My arm is OK – overworked but fine. The expedition sounds thrilling. Aren’t you lucky.” In overall fine condition, with scattered light foxing to the typed letter, and a few small blots to the handwritten letter. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope for the July letter, which is addressed in Hepburn’s hand.

Despite her growing ailments, including a noticeable tremor, Hepburn proved she wasn’t quite ready for retirement in 1980, which coincided with the initial filming of On Golden Pond. The film proved to be a huge success and was the second-highest-grossing film of 1981. Moreover, it earned Hepburn her record fourth Academy Award for her role as the quirky Ethel Thayer.
