Description

“As the government desires your presence as an expert witness in the case of the United States vs Guiteau you will please remain in the city until your testimony is taken"

American lawyer (1838-1886) who served as United States Attorney for the District of Columbia and prosecuted Charles J. Guiteau for the assassination of President James A. Garfield. LS signed “George B. Corkhill,” one page, 8 x 9.5, Office of the Attorney of the United States letterhead, December 10, 1881. Letter to Dr. Selden H. Talcott at Ebbit House, in full: “As the government desires your presence as an expert witness in the case of the United States vs Guiteau you will please remain in the city until your testimony is taken.” In fine condition, with trivial loss to the lower left corner tip. Talcott did, in fact, remain in the city for his testimony. Together with medical experts Orpheus Everts and Samuel Worcester, Talcott held that Guiteau was sane, testifying that ‘he had never heard of an insane man denying his act [as Guiteau had done] after it was committed.’
