Confidential World War II-era bracket-bound ‘U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey’ manual for the “Hermann Kolb Company, Cologne, Germany,” identified as ‘Machine Tool Plant Report No. 1.” The manual, 8.25 x 10.75, issued as Copy No. 36, dated June 28, 1945, contains sections for the following: Summary, The Plant and Its Function in Enemy Economy, Attacks, Effects of Bombing, Intelligence Check, Data Relevant to Other Studies, Evaluations and Impressions, and Reference Notes.
The manual also contains 13 photographs, charts, and plots, which are entitled: “Photographs of plant subsequent to raids,” “Purchasers of Kelb machine tools,” “Photographs of plant prior to raids,” “Plot of photo locations,” “Chart of machine tool orders received,” “Chart of machine tool shipments,” “Chart of payroll and employee productivity,” “Raw materials on hand and received,” “Principal suppliers of raw materials and parts,” “Chart of power and gas consumption,” “Machines repaired for customers,” “Plant layout,” and “Bomb damage plot.”
The manual’s preface: “This report was written primarily for the use of the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey in the preparation of further reports of a more comprehensive nature. Any conclusions or opinions expressed in this report must be considered as limited to the specific target covered and as subject to further interpretation in the light of further studies conducted by the Survey.” In fine condition.
Accompanied by a transmittal letter from the U.S. Group Control Council (Germany), Office of the Director of Intelligence, Field Information Agency, Technical, dated September 7, 1945, forwarding the manual FIAT “for file in Records Branch Library.”
