Attractive mirror-finish alignment cube for the ATS-6 (Applications Technology Satellite-6) NASA experimental satellite, 1.5˝ x 2.25˝ x 1.5˝, set atop a wooden presentation base, 4˝ x 4˝ x .75˝, which bears an engraved dedication plate, “Charles W. Mathews, ATS-6, Alignment Cube.” In fine condition. Built by Fairchild Space and Electronics Division, the ATS-6 satellite has been called the world's first educational satellite as well as the world's first experimental Direct Broadcast Satellite as part of the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment between NASA and Indian Space Research Organisation. It was launched on May 30, 1974, and decommissioned in July 1979. At the time of launch, it was the most powerful telecommunication satellite in orbit.
