Description

Manuscript document, one page, 7.25 x 8, no date but circa April 1791. True copy of the return of votes for Vassalborough, Massachusetts (now part of Maine), re-electing John Hancock as governor and Samuel Adams as lieutenant governor. In part: "At the Annual Town Meeting held…the fourth day of April Anno Dom. 1791—The Votes for a Governor, Lieut. Governor and Senator were brought in counted and sorted and it appeared that there were for John Hancock Esq. Governor Seventy six for Samuel Adams Esq. Lt. Governor…Sixty Seven, For a Senator for the County of Lincoln were Seventy…for Daniel Coney Esqr, for Samuel Thompson…Thirteen; For Henry Dearborn Esqr. three." Signed at the conclusion in ink by town clerk Asa Redington (a veteran of the Revolution who served as part of George Washington's guard), and countersigned by two selectmen. Addressed on the reverse, "To the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts." In very good condition, with dampstaining to the bottom edge, and paper loss to the side edges, minimally affecting some of the text.
