Description

Rare 'Progress Script’ for the original production of The King and I by Rodgers and Hammerstein— "It was given to my longterm friend Judge White by Oscar Hammerstein!”

Original brad-bound pre-production ‘progress’ script for the award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, originating from the personal collection of actress Liz Robertson, the wife of award-winning lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner. The script, 103 pages, 9 x 11.5, is marked on the front cover, “The King and I, – ooOOoo –,” with the upper left corner bearing an affixed Rialto Service Bureau label. The title page reads: “The King and I (An adaptation from Margaret Landon’s ‘Anna and The King of Siam’), Music by Richard Rodgers, Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, 2nd.” Includes a transmittal letter sent to Robertson by “Robert & Pirgo,” April 27 [no year], which reads: “Here’s a birthday thought which we hope you’ll treasure…It’s the ‘Progress Script’ (i.e. pre-production script) for the original production of: ‘The King & I.’ It was given to my longterm friend Judge White by Oscar Hammerstein!” In very good to fine condition, with wear to the partially detached covers, and paper loss and old tape to the spine; inner pages are all fine.
