Description

Original World War II-era color 22 x 28 poster showing the famed Sullivan Brothers in their United States Navy uniforms, captioned: "The five Sullivan brothers 'missing in action' off the Solomons. They did their part." Published in 1943 by the Office of War Information (OWI Poster No. 42). In very good to fine condition, with loss to the upper left corner and a few chips to edges.

All five brothers were serving on the light cruiser USS Juneau and were killed in action when the ship was sunk during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. These 'Fighting Sullivan Brothers' became national heroes, and their loss was honored by the likes of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Pope Pius XII.

The Collection of Dr. Joseph Matheu.
