Description

Peabody Saddle Ring Carbine by Providence Tool Co., NSN, .50 RF, 20" barrel with a fair bore that has dark pitting within the grooves and patches of pitting along its length. This carbine retains 70-75% of an old, added blue finish that left the markings and stamps clear and legible on the frame. The balance of the metal has patchy brown areas of pinprick pitting and mild surface oxidation scattered throughout, as well as some heavier oxidation on the saddle ring, hammer spur, and on and around the trigger. The walnut forend and buttstock have numerous small handling marks, scuffs, and blemishes evenly scattered about, with a large curved bruise on the left side of the wrist above the saddle ring mount. The buttplate has moderate oxidation present across its surface. The original sights are still present and the action is fully functional, although a trifle hard to open at first.

This carbine conforms to the 1877 South Carolina militia purchase of 350 Peabody carbines originally ordered by France prior to the Franco–Prussian War, but does not have an "SC" property stamp on the buttplate tang. As Peabody military guns were offered for commercial sale as well, this is most likely a commercially sold carbine.

This is an antique firearm and transfers with no federal restriction.
