Desirable first edition of the first biography of John Brown: The Public Life of Capt. John Brown by James Redpath, with an Auto-Biography of his Childhood and Youth. First edition. Boston: Thayer and Eldridge, 1860. Hardcover, 5.25 x 7.75, 407 pages. Redpath chronicles the abolitionist's militant fight against slavery, culminating in his raid on Harpers Ferry. The book also includes an autobiographical section written by Brown himself, recounting his early years and formative influences. Redpath, a staunch supporter of Brown, presents him as a heroic martyr, using the work to inspire anti-slavery sentiment in the North. The frontispiece features a portrait of Brown with his facsimile signature below. Book condition: G+/None, with a cracked rear hinge and sunning to the boards and spine.
