Description

American comedian and actor (1833-1899) who married Asia Booth, daughter of Junius Brutus Booth, and sister of John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln. Following the assassination and his subsequent arrest for suspicion of involvement, Clarke divorced his wife in an attempt to distance himself from the Booth name. ALS signed “J. S. Clarke,” one page, 4.25 x 7, no date. Addressed from the “Strand,” a handwritten letter to British actor and theatre manager J. L. Toole, promising a rain check for a get-together, in full: “Shall have to deprive myself of the pleasure on Sunday. Should be very happy latter part of present month — am called for the stage.” Affixed to a larger backing sheet and in fine condition.
