United States Navy captain (1900–1966) who earned fame as the cartoonist who invented the naval character, 'Eggburt of the Navy.' Three original pen-and-ink cartoons drawn by Earle D. Chesney, all accomplished on 6 x 9 cardstock, each signed in the lower right with his artist's signature, "Chesney." Affixed captions read: "When the artillery is not able to blow the enemy out of his position, when aircraft cannot rout him from his emplacement, there is little doubt as to whom the job will fall. In fact, there is never any doubt"; "—We therefore commit this body to the deep, to be turned into corruption, looking for the resurrection of the body, when the sea shall give up her dead, and the life of the world to come—"; and "The long trail back."
