Standard Union infantry leather waist bent, 41.5˝ long with five latch holes, featuring its original regulation 1839 pattern infantry enlisted waist belt plate, identified to Frederick Gay of the 11th Rhode Island Infantry. Measuring approximately 3.25˝ by 2˝, the plate is made of stamped sheet bass with a soft solder filling and 'puppy paw' fasteners, with maker's stamp: "W. H. Smith, Brooklyn." The belt is complete but fragile, and the buckle has an unpolished brass patina.
Pvt. Frederick Gay enrolled on September 17, 1862, at Providence, Rhode Island, and mustered into Co. I, 11th Rhode Island Infantry, on October 1st at Camp Stevens for nine months' service. The unit went south in early October, participating in the siege of Norfolk. Gay remained present for duty until mustered out on July 13, 1863.
