Unsigned first edition book set: Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant, Volumes I and II. First editions. NY: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885–1886. Hardcovers bound in publisher's cloth with gilt titling and central medallions, 6.5 x 9.25, 584 and 647 pages. Both volumes feature Grant's facsimile signature; both are well-illustrated and feature numerous maps detailing Grant's military exploits, primarily during the Civil War. All plates and maps are intact, including the fold-out facsimile of the correspondence between S. B. Buckner and U. S. Grant in which Buckner accepted his demand for an 'unconditional surrender' at the Battle of Fort Donelson, and the facsimile of Grant's original draft of the terms for General Lee's surrender. Book condition: G+/None, with edgewear, scuffing and rubbing to boards, bumped and fraying corners, and some foxing to textblock.
