Description

Scarce 'Marathon Steward’ badge from the London 1908 Olympics. Sterling silver, 22 gm, 45 mm in diameter, stamped on the reverse with a Vaughton of Birmingham hallmark. The badge depicts a horse and rider encircled by a blue enameled border with the text, "Marathon - 1908 - London, Steward."

The marathon event became infamous after Italian runner Dorando Pietri finished first but was subsequently disqualified. Succumbing to utter exhaustion at the end of the race, Pietri fell several times and was helped back to his feet by officials. Although he managed to finish in first place, Pietri was disqualified for receiving assistance and the gold medal was given to the runner-up, American distance runner Johnny Hayes.
