Description

Desirable lot of five official competitor or participation badges from the historic Olympic Games held in Stockholm 1912, Paris 1924, Rome 1960, Sapporo 1972, and Sarajevo 1984. Before athletes wore photo IDs on lanyards, they were given participant badges. This impressive selection ranges from the Summer Games of 1912 through the Winter Games of 1984, which was the last time athletes wore badges. They are as follows:

Stockholm 1912 Olympics
Silvered bronze competitor’s participation badge from the Stockholm 1912 Olympics, 25 mm x 37 mm, with an ancient Greek athlete's head at the top, three crowns, and "Olympiska Spelen, Stockholm 1912," in raised letters at the bottom, similar to the one given to Jim Thorpe in Stockholm. Reverse bears an impressed maker’s mark.

Paris 1924 Summer Olympics
Official participation badge issued for the Paris 1924 Summer Olympics, 35 mm x 42 mm, marked on the reverse, "9024." The handsome badge features the colorful Olympic rings at the top with "Concurrent [Competitor]" below, and a red enameled border with lettering, "VIIIe Olympiade - Paris - 1924." The badge retains its screw-on backer. The 1924 enameled participant’s badge, “Concurrent” in French, is depicted in the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire.

Rome 1960 Summer Olympics
Desirable athlete’s badge issued for the Rome 1960 Summer Olympics, 38 mm x 48 mm, 24 gm, featuring a bronze-colored bezel with an inset medallion depicting Romulus and Remus with the Capitoline Wolf, and Olympic rings below. The enameled panel at the bottom is red, which indicates that it is a track and field competitor's badge, and features gold lettering, "Atleta."

Sapporo 1972 Winter Olympics
Uncommon competitor's badge issued for the Sapporo 1972 Winter Olympics. Silvered bronze, 37 mm x 59 mm, with the solid green double ribbon measuring 80 mm in length. The badge features the Sapporo Games logo over the Olympic rings and the text, “Sapporo ’72,” and a dark green enamel bar reading, "Competitor." The green ribbon indicates that the badge was issued for a skiing competition.

Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics
Competitor's badge issued for the Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics. Silver-tone, 32 mm x 32 mm, 14 gm, featuring the raised Olympic rings and Sarajevo Games logo, and bearing a solid orange ribbon, a color issued to all badges. Made at the IKOM medal factory in Zagreb. The 1984 badge for Sarajevo is the last of its kind.
