Complete eight-page issue of the New York Tribune from October 22, 1859, reporting on John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry. Headlines include: “Insurrection in Virginia,” “Old John Brown Shot,” and “Terror Through the South.” The paper contains a detailed account of the raid and its attempted insurrection and its aftermath spread over five columns on the front page. Also set forth is the publication of the insurgents’ Provisional Constitution and Ordinances of the People of the United States, commencing with the preamble: “Whereas, Slavery, throughout the entire existence of the United States, is none other than the barbarous, unprovoked, and unjustifiable war on one portion of its citizens against another portion, the only contradictions of which are perpetual imprisonment, and hopeless servitude, or absolute extermination, in utter disregard and violation of those eternal truths set forth in our Declaration of Independence.” In fine condition, with some light creases and staining to the margins. A historic newspaper containing a riveting account of the failed coup.
