Civil War-dated ALS from Union officer Lt. Benjamin Wright, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, July 7, 1864. Addressed from “Camp 10th Conn. Vols.” in Deep Bottom, Virginia, a handwritten letter to “Libbie,” referencing the sinking of the CSS Alabama on June 19, 1864, off the coast of Cherbourg, France. In part: “We received no papers last night but I got some news from those who came up on the mail boat. The news of the sinking of the Alabama is encouraging. The Navy will take a great deal of credit to themselves for the affair no doubt. It is a disgrace to the Navy that it has not been captured or sunk a long while ago.” In fine condition.
