Complete issue of the National Intelligencer from June 3, 1865, four pages, 21.5 x 26.5, containing exhaustive transcripts of testimony given in the trial of the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, including Emma Herold, Jane Herold, Anna E. Surratt, John T. Ford, Henry L. Mudd, Jr., and others. In very good condition, with the hinge separated, partial splits to folds, a tape-repaired tear to the lower edge, and a contemporary ink notation to the upper margin.
The seven-week trial of the conspirators included the testimony of 366 witnesses. All of the defendants were found guilty on June 30. Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt were sentenced to death by hanging; Samuel Mudd, Samuel Arnold, and Michael O'Laughlen were sentenced to life in prison. Edmund Spangler was sentenced to six years.
