Wonderful original watercolor painting of comedy legend Stan Laurel by noted actor and artist Don Barclay, 14.75 x 11.75, featuring a large caricature portrait of Laurel with exaggerated features, signed and titled below by the artist, “Don Barclay, Stan Laurel.” Framed and in fine condition. The consignor notes that this painting was gifted by Barclay in 1946 to his friend Alan Marston, a ubiquitous actor who appeared in many well-known productions but seldom spoke.
Don Barclay was an American actor, artist, and caricaturist whose numerous roles spanned the period from the Keystone Cops in 1915 to Mary Poppins in 1964 and whose many paintings and celebrity caricatures filled establishments worldwide and are archived in the Library of Congress. Barclay is also well-known for his highly sought-after caricature mugs.
