Description

“Here’s the first one, Warner Bros!!!! So Happy! Love ya! Prince”—promotional 12-inch ‘disco’ record for Prince’s first two solo singles

ANS from Prince, penned in black ink on an off-white 5.25 x 5.25 heart-shaped sheet, which has been tape-affixed to the front of a 1978 Warner Bros. Records ‘Disco’ record sleeve containing a promotional 12˝ single record ‘Disco Mix’ of Prince’s first two solo singles, ‘Soft and Wet / Just as Long as We're Together.’ The handwritten note reads: “Dearest Donna, here’s the first one, Warner Bros!!!! So Happy! Love ya! Prince.” In fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from REAL. The record is included. Although the recipient’s identity remains unknown, the person in question may have inspired the unreleased song ‘Donna,’ which Prince recorded in the second half of 1978 or 1979 at his France Avenue Home Studio in Edina, Minnesota.

A historically significant Prince offering that dates to his emergence as a nationally recognized star. Prince’s debut album, For You, was released by Warner Bros. Records on April 7, 1978, with the album’s first two singles, ‘Soft and Wet’ and ‘Just as Long as We're Together,’ marking Prince’s first entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles. Prince’s excited “Warner Bros!!!!” annotation is equally important given the artist’s eventual long and burdensome partnership with the record label. His eventual departure from Warner Bros. some 18 years later was commemorated with his 19th studio album, the appropriately titled Emancipation.
