Original program and concert-torn ticket for the New York Rock Festival held at the Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadows, New York, on August 2, 23, and 30, 1968. The program, 16 pages, 9 x 12, features images and detailed information pages for performers like The Doors, The Who, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Big Brother and The Holding Company, The Vagrants, The Rascals, and The Chambers Brothers. The original ticket stub, which has been torn in half by a ticket attendant, measures 4 x 1.5 and was issued for August 23, 1968, Grandstand Left, No. 1595, with text reading: “The New York Rock Festival, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.” In fine condition, with the Hendrix photo clipped out of the Experience group photo (and no longer present). The three-day New York Rock Festival of 1968 holds the distinction of having one of the greatest musical line-ups in rock history—the kickoff show included the likes of The Doors and The Who, the second show was highlighted by Janis Joplin, Soft Machine, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and the final featured The Rascals and The Vagrants.
Billboard Magazine's Fred Kirby, who attended the Jimi concert, wrote in part: 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience gave one of its finest local performances to date to complete a strong program. From the opening of 'Are You Experienced?' every number hit the mark. An unusual aspect of the set was the singing along by members of the audience, at first it was only slight, but by the time they performed 'Purple Haze' it was widespread. Hendrix, one of the top echelon of today's pop guitarists, stole the show. The vastness of the Singer Bowl (which Jimi drew over 18,000 people) seemed congenial to the trio's highly amplified sound. Whether erect or on the floor, calm or physically assaulting the amplifiers, his playing was outstanding. And Hendrix, who has jammed with many other groups, clearly relishes playing, especially as well as he played on August 23rd.'
