Description

Large 5.25 x 7 swatch of Kapton foil from the IMU of the Apollo 17 Lunar Module Challenger. In fine condition. Accompanied by a notarized letter of authenticity from Marty Winkel, who, from 1968 through 1972, was the Lead Electrical Technician for Grumman's Lunar Module support team at Launch Complex-39 at Kennedy Space Center. “While Apollo 17 was staged for launch on the Launch Pad 39A with LM 12 in the SLA (Spacecraft LM Adapter) the IMU, Inertial Measurement Unit was being replaced due to a problem within the unit. A portion of the mylar blanket (Kapton foil insulating blanket) had to be removed to provide access to the IMU. The accompanied Kapton was to be discarded. Since this was the last Lunar Module to go to the moon, realizing the historical significance of this being the last mission to the moon and the last modification with the removal of Kapton from a soon to be Lunar Module to land on the moon, I saved the sheets that were removed for posterity. They have been in my possession for the past 50 years.”
