Description

Markov on his disputes with Nekrasov and the Moscow Mathematical Society

Russian mathematician (1856–1922) best known for his work on stochastic processes; a primary subject of his research later became known as the Markov chain ALS in Cyrillic, signed “A. Markov,” two pages, 5 x 8.25, October 16, 1893. Handwritten letter to Russian mathematician Vladimir Andreevich Steklov, in part (translated): "Your stated desire of the Administrative Committee of the Kharkiv Mat. Society equals a refusal to me because after known protocols of the Moscow Mathematical Society I find it impossible to subject my letters to Nekrasov any changes." In fine condition, with two file holes to the top edge. An interesting letter with reference to his famous disputes with fellow mathematician Pavel Nekrasov. Markov, an atheist and eventual excommunicate of the Church, quarreled endlessly with his equally outspoken counterpart. The disputes between Markov and Nekrasov were not limited to mathematics and religion, but over political and philosophical issues as well.
