Description

Space Shuttle Development Flight Instrumentation (DFI) 'black box,' measuring 19˝ x 7.5˝ x 9˝, with its Instrumentation Technology & Engineering manufacturer's tag identifying it as "SCU 1441AD503," with a metal plate also stamped "SCU 0142." Marked in red on the body, "OV-101 DFI," signifying the Space Shuttle Enterprise. "SCU" as a Shuttle abbreviation stood for 'Service and Cooling Umbilical' and was for providing support for extravehicular activity with the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU). Since the Enterprise did not fly any missions with EVA, this unit was either a test box for the SCU interface or a simulator for the vehicular portion of the SCU (which was in the airlock). In overall fine condition, with various wear and scratches to the paint.
