Manuscript DS, signed “T. Clarges,” one page, 7.75 x 9, April 18, 1720. A ‘certificate’ for paving new streets in London, which reads, in part: “Pursuant to an Act of Parliam’t made in the second year of the Reigne of the late King William and Queen Mary…for paveing and Cleansing the Streets in the Citys of London & Westm’r & Suburbs…& for regulating the marketts therein mentioned I have viewed a certaine new Street or way called Conduit Street in the parish of St Martin in the Fields…And also one other new Street or way next adjoining called Bond Street, And one other new Street or way called Maddox Street next adjoining to…Bond Street…And doe…adjudge the said severall new Streets…within the Ground fronting & belonging to all the Several Corner Houses belonging and Adjoining to the said Streets fitt and Convenient to be paved with Stone on both Sides [of] the way the whole length and breath.” Signed at the conclusion by Thomas Clarges, Baronet. A docket on the reverse of the integral leaf notes that the streets are “To be paved within—two months the same order as for George Street.” In fine condition, with staining to the right edge and fold ends.
