Description

On the American response to the "Titanic 'unfortunate accident' "

TLS signed “C.E.R.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, May 24, 1912. Letter to his brother, C. A. Rönne of the French Telegraph Cable Co. in New York, commenting on the American response to the Titanic disaster. In part: "Nothing much to add to my last post's budget. I must however ask your pardon for not acknowledging receipt of the papers re: Titanic 'unfortunate accident' which I read with interest. It was upon my sending some of them to Max W., which caused his ire to rise against everything the Americans had done in the matter. I should like to know if an American ship had met with such an 'unfortunate accident' near the coast of England, & that the ship was filled with British subjects of the British Board of Trade, would not have made an investigation in England? Do you think for an instant they would have relied upon the American one? Just answer that inquiry, if thou pleaseth???" He continues with some discussion of family matters, shopping in Europe, and politics. In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
