Description

"Your big effort in Pennsylvania really helped! Winning the primary there is going to give the campaign a big boost"

Two TLSs signed "George," both on personal stationary. One on a 6.25 x 4.5 black-bordered card, April 11, 1978, and one on a 7.25 x 10.25 letter sheet. Both are addressed to noted Football Hall of Famer and broadcaster Bud Wilkinson, concerning Bush’s 1980 presidential run. The 1978 card reads, in full: "Enjoyed the chat this morning. Enclosed are some clips and my schedule which will give you an idea as to what I’m doing. Best of luck in the up-coming football wars.” The 1980 letter reads, in full: “Thanks so much for speaking at the breakfast in Kittanning, for talking to the media in Reading about our campaign and for addressing the students at Albright College. Your big effort in Pennsylvania really helped! Winning the primary there is going to give the campaign a big boost. Thanks again for all you’ve done for me. With the help of friends like you I am confident of winning the nomination.” Both letters in fine condition. Together with a souvenir Inaugural Committee Invitation, 8.5 x 11.5 with envelope and enclosures for the 1981 Reagan/Bush inauguration. In overall very fine condition.

Charles “Bud” Wilkinson (1916-94) won three college national football championships as both a player (1934-36) and as head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners (1950, 1955, and 1956). In 1964 he became the lead color commentator on college football telecasts for ABC Sports. He was head coach of the St. Louis Cardinals (NFL) from 1978-79 before returning to broadcasting for ESPN.
