"Col. White did not arrive...Lt. Chaffee did not arrive"—the Apollo 1 astronaut corrects the record on a hotel booking mix-up

ANS signed "Ed," penned in response to a memo written to him on a 6 x 9.5 notebook page, May 19, [1966]. White replies to a note concerning a dispute over a hotel bill, writing: "1. There was some mix up as they should have been notified that we were staying at the Univ. 2. I was not aware of a guaranteed reservation basis and cannot accept such as basis due to the uncertainty of our travel. The night of the 13th was spent Oklahoma City…3. I understand their position, but also feel that there is a reasonable basis for the misunderstanding." In fine condition. Accompanied by two invoices from the Carolina Inn at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for reservations made by NASA for "Col. E. H. White" and "Lt. R. D. Chaffee," noting that neither arrived at the Inn and demanding a balance due of $9.27 apiece. Also includes a full letter of authenticity from Zarelli Space Authentication.

The Apollo 1 astronauts were in North Carolina on April 14–15, 1966, for training at Morehead Planetarium, located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. From 1959 through 1975, every astronaut in the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo–Soyuz Test Project programs spent hours in celestial navigation training at the planetarium. An interesting piece pertaining to two of the Apollo 1 crewmen and their training at Morehead Planetarium.
