Hendrix rocks -and rescues -the 1970 New York Pop Festival
Scarce original 23 x 35 poster for the New York Pop Festival held at Downing Stadium on Randall's Island on July 17-19, 1970, which lists the festival's roster of big-name musical acts, such as the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Grand Funk Railroad, Jethro Tull, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, Steppenwolf, Richie Havens, Ten Years After, Mountain, Ravi Shankar, and The Tony Williams Lifetime, who will be joined on stage by Jack Bruce, Eric Clapton, and special guest star Miles Davis. Lower border features ticket and venue information, with bold text: "Purchase Tickets Early. No Tickets Will Be Sold At The Gate." Rolled and in fine condition, with some light creasing and edgewear. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks.
After the triumph of Woodstock the previous year, the three-day New York Pop Festival tried to re-create its success in New York City. Unfortunately, the concert proved a bust as half of the star-studded lineup failed to show up and thousands of fans earned free entry when they literally crashed through the perimeter fencing. One of the handful of highlights from the festival was the rousing performance by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
