Vintage Hendrix handbill signed backstage in 1967 Sweden

Extremely rare 6 x 8.25 double-sided handbill for a Jimi Hendrix Experience concert at the Bongo-New Orleans Club in Malmo, Sweden, on May 23, 1967, signed in ballpoint by Jimi Hendrix and by the group’s manager, Chas Chandler. The reverse bears an advertisement for The Doors and their single "A Break On Through." In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds and light creasing. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Tracks, a full letter of authenticity from REAL, and by a letter of provenance from the original recipient: “The Jimi Hendrix Experience was performing on Klubb Bongo on Friisgatan in Malmo on May 23, 1967. They had 2 shows, one at 7:30 pm and one at 10 pm. Both shows were of course fully booked.

I was 16 years old. My friend and I were sitting on the bus on our way to Malmo from Helsingborg. The bus driver had the radio on the speakers and the song ‘Hey Joe’ was playing. We thought it was a funny coincidence as we were on the way to Klubb Bongo to experience the concert with Jimi Hendrix for the first time.

When we arrived at Klubb Bongo l went up the stairs passing the floor the Namelosers were playing and continued to the third floor. In an area which looked like an office space I spotted the American guitarist getting ready for his show. I waited outside and when he arrived towards me I reached out the concert program and asked for an autograph. Jimi Hendrix had his mind on something else and passed by me without a word. I did not give up. 'Please could I get your autograph.' He stopped and turned his guitar, which was hanging on his back, upside down. He placed the program sheet on the guitar and wrote his autograph. I was very excited. I followed Jimi down the stairs to the second floor and noticed a man standing at the bottom of the stairs with crossed arms. I immediately got an interesting impression of the man. I did not know who the man was but he seemed thrilled and happy and I got the feeling that he had something to do with the concert. So I decided to ask him for his autograph which he wrote on the same concert sheet.

The signed concert program ended up in a memory box and it was not until 30 years later, when I was decorating my music room and took it out, that I started to wonder who that man really was. I soon realized that it was no other than Jimi Hendrix manager and the former bassist in The Animals, Chas Chandler.”
