Description

German composer, conductor, and one of the founders of the Vienna Philharmonic (1810-1849) who is best known for his operatic version of Shakespeare's comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor as Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor. Two items: an AMQS on an off-white 9 x 7.25 sheet containing numerous bars of music for voice and piano, signed at the conclusion, “Otto Nicolai, 1847”; and an AMS in German on an off-white 9.5 x 5.75 sheet, signed within the text by Nicolai, who, referencing a partial 24-bar musical piece on the reverse, indicates that the work is for women's choir with Physharmonico and pianoforte accompaniment from his melodrama “Il templario,” and then mentions the names of Beethoven, Diabelli, and Mozart; the aforementioned reverse, accomplished by an unknown hand, has been annotated by Nicolai, who adds above, “Allegretto” and “Physharmonica.” In overall very good condition, with staining, soiling, creasing, and some edge loss to the AMQS.
