Soldier (1836-1899) who enlisted in the Confederate service in May 1861 and was subsequently elected 1st lieutenant in Company D of the 26th North Carolina Infantry. He was wounded in the hip at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, as the regiment suffered severe losses in the failed assault on Cemetery Ridge. He was captured two days later on the retreat south and, after time in a Federal hospital, was sent to the prison camp at Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he was confined for the duration of the war. Civil War-dated ALS signed “James B. Jordan,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, March 5, 1865. Handwritten letter to Miss M. E. Fearn, from "Island Home," Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he was being held as a prisoner of war. In part: "To look upon that sweet face, forcibly reminds me of 'happier days and brighter'—when with light hearts and gay, we played together around the paternal hearth, concocted grand schemes for the furtherance of our childish sports…Ah! those were days of 'sunshine.' I must confess, dear Mattie, that I do feel 'flattered' of the preference shown me, and many thanks for the same—the picture & letter are already stored away among my other treasures." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, stamped with a "Prisoner's Letter" examination stamp.
