Marvelous large-format matte-finish 10.5 x 13.25 portrait photograph of Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy. This photo was taken by photographer Louis Fandrick of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on March 30, 1960, during Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign and a week before the Wisconsin primary on April 5th, when he earned a narrow victory over Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey. Impressively mounted and framed to an overall size of 19.75 x 23.75. In very fine condition.
Kennedy won the Wisconsin primary with the support of Catholic voters, including some Republican Catholics who voted in the Democratic primary. Days before the event, Kennedy said it had been the ‘toughest, closest, most meaningful.’ Although the unexpectedly slim victory left questions about Kennedy's ability to carry the convention or the election in the fall, his resounding primary win in West Virginia on May 20th forced Humphrey to withdraw from the race and many of his detractors to take notice. A veteran of World War II, Louis Fandrick (1918-2004) worked as a news photographer and photo engraver at the Manitowoc Herald-Times Reporter for 42 years, retiring in 1981.
